PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who has been predicting the weather annually in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin in celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not an expert in weather forecasting and should not be continuously used for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree as a means to forecast the weather.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about meteorology.
PETA aims to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow them to live without any concerns, free from being constantly handled and spun around, and enabling them to engage in their natural behaviors which they are currently deprived of in their confined Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual event of Phil, a small and furry creature, coming out of his temporary residence. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will either indicate that there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
Released in 1993, Groundhog Day is a film that features Bill Murray in the role of a discontented weatherman who finds himself trapped in a repetitive time cycle.
