PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil and Replacement with Giant Coin

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who is famous for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead, they propose using a giant coin for this tradition.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.

PETA stated that he is not a weather expert and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.

During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.

According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil and his companion to be transferred to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that are currently being restricted in his Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from the local community and visitors from various places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual event of Phil, a small and furry creature, emerging from his temporary dwelling. His appearance determines whether he sees his shadow, indicating six more weeks of winter, or if there is no shadow, suggesting an early arrival of spring.

The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray as a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a repetitive cycle of time, was made available to the public in the year 1993
