Garth Brooks’ Diving Catch: How It Changed Craig Counsell’s Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks, the famous country singer, had a significant impact on the batting stance of an MLB player in the past. Craig Counsell, who is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a successful career as a professional baseball player for over a decade, starting in 1995 and ending in 2007.

Counsell was famous for his unique and non-traditional way of holding his bat while batting. He would raise it high up in the air, and the reason behind this peculiar stance remained a mystery to everyone. Interestingly, Counsell never offered any explanation for his unconventional

After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. It was during this event that someone finally inquired about the reason behind his habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the blame to Garth Brooks.

Counsell confesses that he wasn't skilled in hitting the ball, particularly during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers when he attended their spring training. He struggled to make any successful hits.

During a spring training game, I struck the ball hard towards the left field. I felt exhilarated, thinking it would be my first successful hit. With excitement, I lowered my head and swiftly rushed towards first base. The crowd erupted with wild cheers and applause. However, as I glanced up, I was astonished to see that Garth Brooks had unexpectedly made a remarkable diving catch in left field. This incredible play by him prolonged my unfortunate streak of not getting a single hit in the game, as I remained 0-4.

The individuals present at the press conference found this narrative amusing.

The following day, I was set free. I engaged in a personal conversation, questioning myself, "Why am I unable to achieve any successes?" This dialogue ultimately prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air. Surprisingly, this action proved to be beneficial and effective for me.

I hold Garth Brooks responsible for a terrible posture while batting.

Brooks, who is widely regarded as one of the most prominent figures in the music industry, had a notable athletic background during his younger years. He participated in baseball and track and field as a child. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he unfortunately failed to secure a spot on the team.
