PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead, they propose using a giant coin for this purpose.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which happens on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that he does not possess expertise in meteorology and should not be continuously used for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA requested the club in 2022 to contemplate the idea of utilizing a persimmon tree as an alternative to Phil for weather forecasting purposes.
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk commented that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather conditions.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live a life free from concerns and not be subjected to being lifted and spun around, allowing him to engage in natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his current Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local area and those visiting from other places have made their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual event where a small creature named Phil comes out of his temporary shelter. Depending on whether or not Phil sees his shadow, it will indicate either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
