Counsell gained recognition for his unique batting stance where he would raise his bat high up in the air. The reason behind this unusual stance remained a mystery as he never provided any explanation for it.
After Counsell assumed the position of manager for the Chicago Cubs, he participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, during which an individual inquired about the reason behind his previous practice of holding the bat at a high altitude.

Counsell clarifies that during his time at spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he struggled as a hitter and wasn't able to make any successful hits.
During a spring training game, I successfully hit a strong hit towards the left field. I felt a surge of excitement thinking that it would be my first base hit. With my head down, I sprinted towards first base as the crowd erupted in wild cheers. However, when I glanced up, I was taken aback to see that Garth Brooks had unexpectedly made a remarkable diving catch in left field, causing me to continue my streak of not getting any hits in that game.
The people attending the press conference found this story to be extremely funny.
The following day, I was set free. I engaged in a personal conversation, questioning myself about the reason behind my inability to achieve any successful hits. This contemplation ultimately prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air, leading to a positive outcome.
