PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for annually predicting the weather in the U.S.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a professional in the field of meteorology and should not be continuously used for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree as a means of predicting the weather, rather than relying on Phil
"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, commented that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by urging them to send Phil and his companion to a reputable sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live a life free from concerns, without being handled roughly and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from the local area and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. This event is significant because it determines whether Phil sees his shadow, indicating six additional weeks of winter, or if he sees nothing, indicating the arrival of an early spring.
