PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin for the task.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the individual in question is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they use a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd event. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be transferred to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without any concerns. In this sanctuary, Phil will be able to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, such as not being handled and spun around.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and hairy creature, from his temporary dwelling. This event determines whether or not Phil's shadow is visible, which predicts either six additional weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
In 1993, the film Groundhog Day was released, featuring Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a repetitive cycle of time.
