Counsell had a reputation for his unique batting stance, in which he held his bat high above his head. The reason behind this peculiar stance remained a mystery, as he never provided any explanation for it.
After being appointed as the manager for the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, someone finally inquired about the reason behind his previous habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.
Counsell explains that his skills as a hitter were not particularly strong. He recalls a time when he was part of the Los Angeles Dodgers and attending their spring training, but struggled to make any successful hits.
During spring training, I hit a powerful hit towards the left field. I was filled with excitement as it seemed like my first base hit. With my head down, I swiftly ran towards first base. The crowd erupted with wild enthusiasm. However, when I looked up, I saw Garth Brooks unexpectedly making an incredible diving catch in left field, thus prolonging my streak of not getting any hits in the game.
The individuals present at the press conference found this narrative to be extremely amusing.
The following day, I was set free from my obligations. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I was unable to achieve any successful outcomes. As a result, I raised my hands high up in the air, which surprisingly made a positive difference.

Brooks, a highly celebrated figure in the music industry, had a notable athletic background during his youth. He actively participated in baseball and track and field events. Despite his efforts, he had three separate attempts to join the New York Mets but unfortunately, he was not successful in securing a spot on the team.
