PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of forecasting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a colossal coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin in celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
According to PETA, he lacks expertise in meteorology and it is unfair to continuously use him for the sole purpose of generating revenue from tourism.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree instead of Phil for predicting the weather.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than having expertise in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live a life free from concern, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that were previously denied to him in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary shelter. This event determines whether Phil's shadow is seen, indicating six additional weeks of winter, or if no shadow is seen, suggesting an early arrival of spring.
