PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather, to step down from his yearly role in the United States. Instead, they propose replacing him with a massive coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the famous groundhog with a big coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a professional in meteorology and should not be continually used solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue, as they deserve to be treated with more respect

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that instead of relying on Phil, they should consider using a persimmon tree to forecast the weather.
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in the field of meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. Their goal is to transfer Phil, along with his companion, to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns and enjoy engaging in natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his current Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both nearby and distant places have journeyed to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the spectacle of Phil, a small and furry creature, coming out of his temporary residence. Depending on whether he sees his shadow or not, it predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
In 1993, the film Groundhog Day was released, featuring Bill Murray as a frustrated weatherman who finds himself trapped in a repetitive time cycle.
