PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role as a weather predictor in the United States. They propose replacing him with a sizable coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
During that time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk mentioned that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living as nature intended him to, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. This would allow him to live a life free from concerns and the stress of being handled and spun around, and instead, engage in natural behaviors that he has been denied while living in his Plexiglas enclosure.
