How Garth Brooks’ Diving Catch Led to a MLB Hitter’s Unconventional Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks, the popular country singer, once had an impact on the batting stance of an MLB player. Craig Counsell, who is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a successful career as a professional baseball player for over a decade, from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell had a distinctive and unorthodox way of standing while batting. He would hold his bat high up in the air, leaving everyone curious about the reason behind this peculiar stance. Surprisingly, he never provided any explanation for it.

After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During this event, someone eventually inquired about the reason behind his habit of holding the bat in a high position.

He attributes responsibility to Garth Brooks.

According to Counsell, during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers at spring training, he admits to not being a proficient hitter as he struggled to make any successful hits.

During spring training, I hit a powerful hit towards the left field. I felt thrilled as it was my first base hit. Excitedly, I immediately lowered my head and sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted into wild cheers and applause. However, when I glanced up, I was taken aback to see that Garth Brooks had unexpectedly made a remarkable diving catch in left field, causing my streak of not getting any hits to continue at 0-4.

The individuals attending the press conference were highly amused by this story.

The following day, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I couldn't achieve any successes. This reflection prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air, and surprisingly, it made a difference!

Garth Brooks is responsible for my terrible batting stance.

Brooks, who is considered one of the most prominent figures in the music industry, also had a passion for sports during his youth. He engaged in baseball and participated in track and field events. Despite his three attempts to join the New York Mets, he was unfortunately unable to secure a spot on the team.
