PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who has been annually predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to substitute the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned in the statement is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of Phil.
During that period, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, commented that Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more humane February 2nd celebration. They want to relocate Phil along with his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without any concerns. In this sanctuary, Phil will be able to engage in natural behaviors that are currently restricted in his Plexiglas enclosure, without being constantly handled and spun around.
