PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
A letter was written to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, by an animal rights group with a controversial reputation. They have asked the club to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the upcoming Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed the opinion that he is not a meteorologist and should not be used every year for the sake of generating tourism revenue, highlighting that he should receive fair treatment instead.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in the field of meteorology.
PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by urging them to send Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would provide them with a worry-free life, free from being handled and spun around, and allow them to engage in their natural behaviors that they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
