PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Should Groundhog Day Replace the Famed Groundhog with a Giant Coin?

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. Instead, they propose replacing him with a giant coin.

The controversial animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that the person being referred to is not a professional meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually just for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.

During that period, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, expressed that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and thriving in his natural environment rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.

Newkirk, the spokesperson for PETA, expressed their desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They aim to relocate Phil, along with his companion, to a trustworthy sanctuary where he can live a life free from concerns. This would mean he would no longer be subjected to being lifted and spun around, allowing him to engage in natural behaviors that he has been deprived of in his current Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They come to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will indicate either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a repeating time cycle, was made available to the public in the year
