Garth Brooks, the famous country singer, had an impact on an MLB hitter's batting stance in the past. Craig Counsell, who is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs, used to be a skilled hitter during his time in Major League Baseball from 1995 to 2007.
Counsell had a unique and unusual way of holding his bat while batting. Instead of holding it at a normal position, he would lift it up high in the air. This peculiar stance puzzled everyone as nobody could understand the reason behind it. Furthermore, Counsell never provided
After Counsell was appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, he participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, where someone finally inquired about the reason behind his habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.
Counsell clarifies that he was not skilled as a hitter during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, specifically when he participated in spring training with the team. He expresses his inability to achieve any successful hits during that period.
During a spring training game, I struck a powerful hit towards the left field. I felt a surge of excitement, thinking that it would be my first base hit of the game. With my head down, I sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted in cheers, their enthusiasm filling the air. However, when I glanced up, I was stunned to see Garth Brooks, the famous singer, diving to make an incredible catch in left field, preventing me from breaking my streak of not getting a hit in four attempts.
The people attending the press conference found this story to be very funny.
The following day, I was set free from whatever situation I was in. I took some time to have a conversation with myself, questioning why I couldn't achieve any success. This self-reflection prompted me to raise my hands up high, and surprisingly, it made a positive difference.
Garth Brooks is the one I hold responsible for my dreadful batting stance.
Brooks, who is renowned as one of the most prominent figures in the music industry, also showed his athletic abilities during his childhood by participating in baseball and track and field. Although he had three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he was ultimately unable to secure a position on the team.
