PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States. PETA suggests replacing Phil with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Tom Dunkel, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person being referred to is not a professional in the field of meteorology and should not be taken advantage of every year solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested the idea of utilizing a persimmon tree as a weather predictor rather than relying on Phil.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly knowledgeable in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being an expert in meteorology.
PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil (and his companion) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and engage in natural behaviors that he is unable to do in his current Plexiglas enclosure, as per Newkirk.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of a small and furry creature named Phil. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it is believed to predict either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
