PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who is currently known for his annual role in predicting the weather in the United States. PETA suggests replacing him with a giant coin instead.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In this letter, they have asked the club to replace the popular groundhog with a big coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not an expert in meteorology, and they believe that he should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable about meteorology.
According to Newkirk from PETA, they are advocating for the groundhog club to start a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns or being subjected to being held and spun around. Additionally, he would be able to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary residence. If Phil sees his shadow, it means that there will be six more weeks of winter; if he doesn't see his shadow, it indicates that an early spring is on its way.
