PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. Instead, they propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, suggesting that instead of using a groundhog, they should use a big coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a professional in the field of meteorology and should not be used solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree for weather predictions instead of relying on Phil.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, but he is not knowledgeable in the field of meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil, the groundhog, and his companion to be transferred to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would provide them with a worry-free life, free from being handled roughly and spun around, and allow them to engage in their natural behaviors which they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather there to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it is believed to predict either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
