The animal rights organization PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather, to step down from his role and be replaced with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a professional meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as an alternative to Phil for predicting the weather.
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
"PETA aims to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trusted sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in the natural behaviors that have been denied to him in his Plexiglas enclosure," Newkirk elaborated.
For over a century, people from both the local area and other places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual event of Phil, a small and furry creature, emerging from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his own shadow or not, it signifies either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray as a weatherman who is unhappy with his job and trapped in a repeating time sequence, came out in 1993.
