PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Should Groundhog Day Feature a Giant Coin Instead?

  • by

Animal rights organization PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States. PETA suggests replacing Phil with a giant coin for the annual event.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which falls on February 2nd.

PETA stated that the person in question is not a meteorologist and should not be used every year solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 with a suggestion to use a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.

According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and leading a natural life as per his instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.

According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without any concerns and without being subjected to being handled and spun around. This would allow them to engage in natural behaviors that they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from near and far have journeyed to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry creature, emerging from his temporary residence. Based on whether he sees his shadow or not, this predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

The film Groundhog Day, which featured Bill Murray playing the role of an unhappy weatherman trapped in a repeating cycle of time, came out in the year 1993.
