PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin for this role.
A letter was recently sent to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, by an animal rights organization. In the letter, the group expressed their desire for the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned in the statement is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022 to replace Phil with a persimmon tree for weather predictions.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
PETA is advocating for the groundhog club to start a more compassionate February 2nd celebration and allow Phil (and his friend) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live a worry-free life, without being handled forcefully and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently denied in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have made their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
