PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who is currently known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year.
An animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, the group expresses their request for the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd. The group has been known for their controversial views on animal rights.
According to PETA, the person in question does not have expertise in meteorology, and it is unfair to continuously use him solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested the idea of utilizing a persimmon tree as an alternative weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is highly skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, but he does not possess expertise in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have made their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will indicate whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
Released in 1993, "Groundhog Day" is a film featuring Bill Murray in the role of a frustrated weatherman who finds himself trapped in a repetitive cycle of time.
