PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for his annual weather predictions in the United States. Instead, they propose the use of a giant coin to replace the tradition.
A group of animal rights activists has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their concerns. The group is suggesting that instead of using a groundhog for the Groundhog Day holiday on February 2nd, the club should consider using a large coin instead.
According to PETA, the individual in question is not a meteorologist and it is unjust for them to be continually used for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should utilize a persimmon tree as a means to forecast the weather, rather than relying on Phil
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil (and his partner) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without fear, without being handled and spun around, and can partake in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, as stated by Newkirk.
Since 1887, people who live in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as well as visitors from all over, have been coming to watch a groundhog named Phil come out of his temporary home. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it is believed to predict either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film "Groundhog Day," which features Bill Murray as a frustrated weatherman trapped in a never-ending cycle of time, was made available to the public in 1993.
