How Garth Brooks’ Diving Catch Led to an MLB Hitter’s Unconventional Batting Stance

Garth Brooks, the renowned country singer, had the ability to influence the batting stance of a professional baseball player during his time in the MLB. Craig Counsell, the current manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a remarkable career as a baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell was famous for his unique and unconventional way of holding the bat while batting. He would raise it high up in the air, leaving everyone curious about the reason behind his unusual stance. Surprisingly, he never provided any explanation for it either.

After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, during which an individual inquired about the reason behind his previous habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.

According to Counsell, during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers at spring training, he admits to not being a proficient hitter as he struggled to get any hits.

During spring training, I successfully hit a powerful hit towards the left field. I felt a surge of excitement as it was my first hit of the season. Determined, I lowered my head and sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted with enthusiasm, their cheers echoing throughout the stadium. However, to my surprise, when I glanced up, I discovered that Garth Brooks, the musician, had made an impressive diving catch in left field. This extraordinary catch prolonged my streak of not getting any hits, leaving me with a disappointing 0-

The individuals present at the media briefing found this narrative to be extremely amusing.

The following day, I was set free from whatever situation I was in. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I was not achieving any successful results. This self-reflection prompted me to lift my hands high up in the air, and surprisingly, it made a positive impact.

I attribute a terrible batting stance to Garth Brooks.

Brooks, who is widely recognized as one of the most prominent figures in the music industry, also had a background in sports during his childhood. He actively participated in baseball and track and field events. Despite his talent and efforts, he had three separate opportunities to join the New York Mets but unfortunately, he was not able to secure a spot on the team.
