PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for annually predicting the weather in the United States. PETA proposes replacing Phil with a giant coin for this role.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin to commemorate the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
According to PETA, the person in question is not a professional in the field of meteorology. PETA believes that this individual should not be taken advantage of annually for the purpose of generating tourism

PETA approached the club in 2022 with a suggestion to replace Phil with a persimmon tree for weather prediction purposes.
"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and embracing the natural lifestyle that is intended for him by nature, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live free from any concerns. This would allow them to engage in their natural behavior, which is currently restricted in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from the local community and visitors from various places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry creature, coming out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
