PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to substitute the traditional groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which falls on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned is not a meteorologist and that they should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

In the year 2022, PETA made a request to the club to contemplate using a persimmon tree as a weather predictor rather than relying on Phil.
During that time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
PETA is advocating for the groundhog club to start a more compassionate February 2nd tradition by allowing Phil (and his companion) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without fear and without being handled and spun around, and he can finally engage in the natural behaviors that have been denied to him in his current Plexiglas enclosure, as stated by Newkirk.
For over a century, people from the local community and visitors from various places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness a special event. They gather to see a small furry creature named Phil come out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, which was released in 1993, features Bill Murray in the role of a frustrated weatherman who finds himself trapped in a recurring time period.
