PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who has been traditionally used to predict the weather in the United States. Instead, PETA suggests the use of a giant coin for this purpose.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, urging them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd.
According to PETA, the individual in question lacks expertise in meteorology and should not be continuously used for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should replace Phil with a persimmon tree as a means to predict the weather.
"Ingrid Newkirk, the President of PETA, stated that Phil excels in digging, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than having expertise in meteorology."
Newkirk from PETA expressed the organization's desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. PETA hopes to relocate Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live free from concerns and avoid being handled and spun around. This would enable them to engage in natural behaviors that are currently restricted in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over 100 years, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness an event where a small animal named Phil comes out of its temporary shelter. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will indicate either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
In 1993, the film "Groundhog Day" was released, featuring Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who is frustrated and trapped in a repetitive cycle of time.
