Garth Brooks, the country music singer, influenced a professional baseball player to alter his batting stance in the past. The current manager of the Chicago Cubs, Craig Counsell, had an impressive career as a major league baseball player lasting from 1995 to 2007.
Counsell gained recognition for his unique batting stance, where he would hold his bat in the air at an unusually high position. The reason behind his unconventional stance remained a mystery as he never provided an explanation for it.
After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell took part in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, someone finally inquired about the reason behind his previous practice of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the blame to Garth Brooks.
Counsell clarifies that he wasn't skilled at hitting the baseball during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers while participating in spring training. He struggled to achieve any successful hits.
During spring training, I hit a strong hit towards the left field. I was filled with excitement as it would have been my first base hit. Eagerly, I lowered my head and began running towards first base. The crowd erupted in wild cheers. However, when I glanced up, I was shocked to see Garth Brooks, who had unexpectedly made a remarkable diving catch in left field, thereby prolonging my streak of not getting any hits in the game.
The individuals present at the media briefing found this narrative to be extremely amusing.
The day after being released, Counsell had a conversation with himself where he wondered why he couldn't achieve any successes. This reflection led him to raise his hands up high, and surprisingly, it made a positive impact.
I attribute a terrible batting stance to Garth Brooks.
Brooks, who is widely regarded as one of the most successful figures in the music industry, had a passion for sports during his younger years. He actively participated in baseball and track and field. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he unfortunately did not secure a spot on the team.
