PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin instead.
A letter, addressed to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, has been sent by an animal rights organization. They have made a request for the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA stated that he lacks expertise in meteorology and should not be consistently used for the sole purpose of generating revenue through tourism.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the idea of using a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to PETA president Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is skilled in digging, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts rather than having expertise in meteorology.
Newkirk from PETA expressed the organization's desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They hope to relocate Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without fear and without being handled and spun around. This would allow them to engage in their natural behaviors, which they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure.
