Garth Brooks’ Unlikely Influence: How He Changed a MLB Hitter’s Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks, the country music star, once had an impact on the batting stance of an MLB player. Craig Counsell, currently the manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a successful career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell was famous for his unique batting stance, where he held his bat high up in the air. The reasoning behind this unusual stance remained a mystery, as he never provided any explanation for it.

After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, someone finally inquired about the reason behind his habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.

Counsell elaborates that during his time at spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he struggled as a hitter and was unable to achieve any successful hits.

During a spring training game, I successfully hit a strong hit towards the left field. Excitedly, I thought to myself, "Finally, my first base hit!" Without wasting any time, I quickly lowered my head and sprinted towards first base. The spectators in the crowd erupted into wild cheers. However, when I glanced up, I was astonished to see that Garth Brooks had made an incredible diving catch in left field, preventing me from ending my 0-4 streak.

The people attending the press conference found this story to be extremely funny.

On the following day, I was set free. I had a personal conversation with myself, questioning why I couldn't achieve any successful hits. This reflection prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air, and surprisingly, it made a significant difference in my performance.

I attribute a terrible batting stance to Garth Brooks.

Brooks, who is widely recognized as one of the most successful figures in the music industry, had a passion for sports during his childhood. He actively participated in baseball and track and field events. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he unfortunately did not succeed in securing a spot on the team.
