PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who is known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin as a way to eliminate the exploitation of animals.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern that the individual mentioned is not a meteorologist and should not be continuously used for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree to forecast the weather instead of relying on Phil.
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and leading a natural life as per his instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in weather forecasting.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more humane February 2nd celebration. They want Phil and his companion to be sent to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without any concerns. In the sanctuary, Phil will be able to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently unable to do in his Plexiglas enclosure, such as not being constantly handled and spun around.
