The Garth Brooks Effect: How the Country Star’s Spectacular Catch Changed MLB Hitter’s Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks, the famous country singer, had an interesting encounter with a professional baseball player that resulted in him influencing the player's batting stance. Craig Counsell, who is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs, used to be a highly skilled hitter during his time in the major leagues. He enjoyed a successful career as a baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell gained recognition for his unique batting stance where he would hold his bat high above in the air. The reason behind this unconventional approach remained a mystery as he never provided an explanation for it.

After being appointed as the manager for the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, a person finally inquired about the reason behind his practice of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.

Counsell clarifies that during his time in spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he was not a skilled hitter and struggled to make any successful hits.

During spring training, I successfully hit a strong line drive towards the left field. Excitedly, I thought to myself, "Finally, my first base hit!" Determined, I lowered my head and swiftly made my way towards first base. The crowd erupted in wild cheers, their excitement filling the air. However, when I glanced up, I was taken aback to see that Garth Brooks had unexpectedly made a remarkable diving catch in left field, prolonging my unfortunate streak of being 0-4.

The people in attendance at the press conference found this story to be extremely funny.

The following day, I was set free. I engaged in a conversation with myself, questioning why I wasn't able to achieve any successes. This contemplation led me to raise my hands high up in the air, which surprisingly improved my situation.

I attribute a poor batting stance to Garth Brooks.

Brooks, who is renowned as one of the most prominent figures in music, had a different side to him during his youth as he actively participated in sports, including baseball and track and field. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he was unable to secure a spot on the team.
