PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Giant Coin to Replace Groundhog’s Weather Predictions

PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his long-standing role of predicting the weather in the United States. Instead, they propose that a giant coin be used as a replacement.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the famous groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.

PETA expressed their opinion by stating that the person in question is not a professional in the field of meteorology and should not be used solely for the purpose of generating income from tourism.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should replace Phil with a persimmon tree to forecast the weather.

At that moment, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly knowledgeable in digging tunnels, searching for food, and leading a life that aligns with his natural instincts, rather than being an expert in meteorology.

Newkirk from PETA is expressing their hope that the groundhog club will start off February 2nd in a more compassionate way. They are suggesting that Phil and his companion should be sent to a well-respected sanctuary where they can live without any concerns. In this sanctuary, Phil will not be handled and spun around like he is currently in his Plexiglas enclosure. Additionally, he will be able to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of.
