Animal rights organization PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for his annual weather prediction in the United States. PETA suggests replacing Phil with a giant coin for the event.
The animal rights group, in a letter addressed to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, has made a request for the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a professional in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree for weather predictions instead of relying on Phil.
At that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd event. They are advocating for Phil and his companion to be transferred to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live without fear and without being subjected to the stressful practice of being lifted and spun around. In this sanctuary, Phil will have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. The purpose of this event is to determine whether Phil's shadow is visible, indicating six additional weeks of winter, or if no shadow is seen, indicating an early arrival of spring.
