PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog widely known for predicting the weather in the United States. Instead, they propose the substitution of a giant coin for this traditional event.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern by stating that the person in question is not a weather expert, and they should not be used solely for the purpose of attracting tourists and generating profit.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested that they should use a persimmon tree as a means of weather prediction, instead of relying on Phil.
During that time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and simply living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than having expertise in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live a life free from concerns, without being handled and spun around, and be able to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
