PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of predicting the weather in the United States. They propose the idea of replacing the groundhog with a giant coin instead.
A group advocating for animal rights has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person being referred to is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree for weather prediction purposes.
During that period, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts rather than understanding meteorology.
Newkirk from PETA expressed their hope to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd event. They propose that Phil, along with his companion, be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and finally engage in the natural behaviors that have been restricted in his current Plexiglas enclosure.
For over 130 years, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have made their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather there to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry creature, coming out of his temporary residence. Based on whether or not Phil sees his shadow, it determines whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
