PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his long-standing tradition of predicting the weather in the United States. Instead, they propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to substitute the renowned groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, an event held on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a meteorologist and should not be used solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested utilizing a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is highly skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts. However, he is not knowledgeable in the field of meteorology.
PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil (and his partner) to be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. This way, he can live without any concerns, without being handled or spun around, and participate in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the emergence of Phil, a small furry animal, from his temporary residence. This event determines whether Phil's shadow is seen, indicating that there will be six more weeks of winter, or if no shadow is seen, suggesting that an early spring is on its way.
