The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of forecasting the weather in the United States. Instead, PETA suggests replacing Phil with a large coin.
The animal rights group recently sent a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, the group has asked the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern that he should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of tourism revenue, emphasizing that he is not a meteorologist.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the utilization of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil (and his partner) to be transferred to a respected sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in the natural behavior that has been denied to him in his Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from distant places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil the groundhog from his temporary residence. Depending on whether he sees his shadow or not, it is believed that there will either be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film "Groundhog Day" was released in 1993 and features Bill Murray playing the role of a dissatisfied weatherman who gets trapped in a repetitive time cycle.
