PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to substitute the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the individual in question is not a professional meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should replace Phil with a persimmon tree for weather predictions.
"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
PETA is advocating for the groundhog club to start February 2 in a more compassionate way by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This sanctuary would provide them with a worry-free life, free from being handled and spun around, and allow them to engage in their natural behavior that is currently restricted in their Plexiglas enclosure.
