PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for his yearly weather predictions in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the President of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, suggesting that instead of using the traditional groundhog for the Groundhog Day holiday on February 2nd, they should opt for a large coin instead.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned in the statement is not a meteorologist and should not be constantly used for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly knowledgeable about digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being an expert in weather forecasting.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They aim to relocate Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary where they can live without fear, without being lifted and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. This event determines whether Phil's shadow is visible, which predicts six additional weeks of winter, or if there is no shadow, indicating an early arrival of spring.
The film "Groundhog Day" was released in 1993 and features Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who becomes frustrated when he finds himself trapped in a repetitive time cycle
