PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog famous for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead, they propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, they have asked the club to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration that occurs on February 2nd.
According to PETA, he lacks expertise in meteorology, and it is unfair to continuously use him solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested the idea of utilizing a persimmon tree as a means of predicting the weather, rather than relying on Phil the groundhog
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts. However, she emphasized that he is not knowledgeable in the field of meteorology.
PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by urging them to send Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live a life free of stress, without being handled and spun around, and to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, as stated by Newkirk.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of a small and furry creature named Phil. This event determines whether Phil's shadow is seen, which signifies six additional weeks of winter, or if there is no shadow, indicating an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray as a frustrated weatherman trapped in a repeating time cycle, came out in 1993.
