Counsell became famous for his unorthodox batting stance, where he would hold his bat high up in the air, and the reason behind this peculiar stance remained a mystery to everyone. Additionally, Counsell never provided any explanation for his unique batting style.
After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention, during which an individual finally inquired about the reason behind his habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.
He attributes the blame to Garth Brooks.
According to Counsell, during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers at spring training, he struggled as a hitter and was not performing well in terms of getting hits.
During a spring training game, I successfully struck a ball towards the left field. I was ecstatic as it was my first hit of the game. With excitement, I lowered my head and swiftly ran towards first base. The crowd erupted with cheers and applause. However, when I glanced up, I was astonished to see Garth Brooks, who had unexpectedly made a remarkable diving catch in left field, preventing me from breaking my 0-4 streak.
The attendees at the media briefing were greatly amused by this story.
The following day, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I wasn't able to achieve any successful hits. This contemplation ultimately led me to raise my hands up high in the air. Surprisingly, this action had a positive impact and proved to be beneficial.
