Garth Brooks’ Unintended Influence: How His Diving Catch Changed an MLB Hitter’s Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks, the famous country singer, once had an impact on the batting stance of an MLB hitter. Craig Counsell, who is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a successful career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell had a unique and unconventional way of holding his bat while batting. He would raise it high up in the air, and the reason behind this peculiar stance remained a mystery to everyone. Counsell never provided any explanation for this unusual technique.

After being appointed as the manager of the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, someone finally inquired about the reason behind his habit of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.

According to Counsell, during his time at spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he was not skilled at hitting and struggled to get any hits.

During spring training, I hit a powerful ball towards the left field. Excitedly, I thought to myself, "Finally, my first base hit!" With determination, I lowered my head and swiftly ran towards first base. The crowd erupted in wild cheers, but as I glanced up, I was shocked to see Garth Brooks making an incredible diving catch in left field, thwarting my hopes of breaking my 0-4 streak.

The individuals present at the press conference found this narrative to be extremely amusing.

The following day, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I was unable to achieve any successful hits. This internal dialogue prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air. Surprisingly, this action proved to be beneficial and improved my performance.

Garth Brooks is the one I hold responsible for my terrible batting stance.

Brooks, a renowned figure in the music industry, had a parallel interest in sports during his younger days. He actively participated in baseball and track and field events. Despite having three opportunities to join the New York Mets, he unfortunately couldn't secure a spot on the team.
