Fans of both traditional and contemporary country music have something to look forward to. A new version of Glen Campbell's song "Hold on Hope" featuring Eric Church was released on Friday (Jan. 26) after Campbell's passing.
The unexpected release is part of the revamped and posthumous edition of Campbell's album Ghost on the Canvas from 2011. It is set to be released on April 19 through Surfdog Records and Big Machine Label Group.
The touching song was penned by Robert Pollard, and in it, Church and Campbell take turns singing each of the four verses. The lyrics tell the story of a tired individual who openly reflects on life, feelings of isolation, and their desire for a brighter future.
As Campbell and Church sing, they describe how every street is dimly lit and unfolding in a mysterious manner. They ponder on the risks we take in order to constantly strive and work towards our goals. They reflect on the longing to find someone's hand to hold onto, even though we may not be able to see them. They acknowledge that everyone seems to have a sense of hope, and it is this very hope that is keeping them going. All of this is accompanied by the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar.
The song begins with an invitation to a final dance, symbolizing the end of something. However, it is also a reminder that when we deceive each other, we have to face the consequences. The lyrics then mention a woman who is generous and welcoming to everyone. The chorus emphasizes that everyone holds onto hope, which is the only thing keeping the singer going. In the second verse, the drumbeats intensify, adding to the energy of the song.
Included in the album "Glen Campbell Duets – Ghost on the Canvas Sessions" are songs where Glen Campbell collaborated with various artists such as Dolly Parton, Sting, Daryl Hall, Carole King, and Eric Clapton. One of the tracks on the album is a rendition of "Nothing But the Whole Wide World" performed by Clapton and Campbell.
Campbell, known for his popular songs such as "Rhinestone Cowboy," "Gentle on My Mind," and "Southern Nights," passed away on August 8, 2017, in a care facility in Nashville. He had been battling Alzheimer's disease for a considerable period of time, which had also been publicly documented.
At the same time, Church is gaining popularity on the country music charts with his latest song "Man Made a Bar," which he collaborated on with Morgan Wallen. The well-known artists have also decided to work together to bring back the printed versions of Field & Stream magazine.
