Woman Calls Cops on Own Mother for Credit Card Theft: Did She Do the Right Thing?

  • by

A Reddit user is questioning her decision to involve the police after discovering that her mother had taken her credit card without permission to make purchases of fast food and clothing.

The woman's mother recently requested a loan of approximately $500 from her daughter. The mother promised to repay the borrowed money through Cash App once she received her next paycheck. However, the daughter declined the request and firmly stood her ground despite her mother's attempt to argue. Eventually, the mother dropped the matter.

The week after, she discovered that her credit card was not in her possession.

She mentioned that she had accessed her account online to settle her balance after receiving her check earlier that day. To her surprise, the amount she owed was significantly greater than she anticipated. While she was expecting charges for her electric bill, phone bill, and some gas expenses, she noticed several unfamiliar charges for fast food, clothing stores, and more.

The woman suspected that there may have been a technical error, so she contacted her credit card provider and attempted to recollect where she could have misplaced the card. Nonetheless, when she confided in her mother about her concerns regarding the stolen card, her mother confessed that she was actually the one who had the card.

After sharing the incident with my mom, she reassured me not to be concerned because the item was not actually stolen; she had only borrowed it. I must admit, I became upset when I realized she was telling the truth. She promised to transfer the money through Cash App once she received her payment the following day, and she believed she could resolve the situation before I even noticed.

The enraged woman instructed her mother to shred the card since she had already rendered it useless, but her mother scolded her for being ungrateful and demanding in assisting her.

The situation became more intense, and I used offensive words towards her before instructing her not to communicate with me or visit me, and then I ended the call. Following that, I contacted both the police in my location and her location to determine the appropriate jurisdiction for filing charges, she explained.

The woman shared that her mother has been excessively calling and messaging her, to the point where she had to block her. Furthermore, her mother has been publicly posting on Facebook, claiming that the woman is responsible for her potential return to jail simply because she borrowed some money. The woman expressed her disbelief at how her mother could perceive her as stingy, considering the situation.

Commenters on the platform suggested that the woman should take legal action and speculated that her mother might have had previous encounters with the law.

"Sent back to jail? So your mother has a tendency to not follow the law? It seems like you made the correct decision. Don't give in, go ahead and press charges. She is not someone who should be a part of your life," a commenter advised.

One individual stated that the person's mother engaged in credit card fraud. If this incident occurred in the United States, it would be considered a serious crime and treated accordingly. The individual further commented that the mother should have considered the consequences beforehand. If she wanted to avoid going back to jail, it would have been wise for her to refrain from stealing.

"Do not allow her to manipulate you emotionally. It seems like there have been numerous instances in the past where she has acted in a similar manner, and you have multiple valid reasons for making this decision, not just one incident. It is unnecessary for you to have this negative influence in your life," someone else added their opinion.
