Woman Calls Cops on Own Mother for Credit Card Theft: Did She Do the Right Thing?

  • by

A Reddit user is questioning her decision to involve the police after discovering that her mother had taken her credit card without permission to make purchases of fast food and clothing.

Some time ago, the woman's mother requested a loan of approximately $500 from her daughter. The mother promised to repay the borrowed money through Cash App once she received her next paycheck. The woman declined her request, leading to an argument, but she firmly stood her ground and her mother eventually dropped the topic.

However, the week after, she realized that her credit card was not in her possession.

She mentioned that she had accessed her online account to settle her outstanding balance after receiving her check in the morning. However, she was surprised to find that her balance was significantly higher than she had anticipated. Among the expected charges for her electric bill, phone bill, and gas, there were also multiple charges for items such as fast food and clothing that she knew she hadn't made.

Suspecting a possible error, the woman contacted her credit card company and attempted to recall any potential locations where she could have misplaced her card. Nevertheless, when she reached out to her mother to express her concerns about the stolen card, her mother confessed to being the one in possession of the card.

After I informed my mother about the incident, she reassured me not to be concerned because it wasn't actually stolen; she had simply borrowed it. Honestly, I became upset when I realized she was being serious. She assured me that she would transfer the money to me through Cash App once she received her payment the following day, and she believed she could resolve it before I even noticed.

The woman, who was very angry, instructed her mother to shred the card since she had already disabled it. In response, her mother criticized her for behaving like a spoiled child instead of assisting her.

The situation became more intense, and I used offensive language towards her before instructing her not to get in touch with me and ending the call. Following that, I contacted both the local police in my area and in her area to determine the appropriate precinct where I could file charges.

The woman stated that her mother has been calling her excessively, to the point where she had to block her. Additionally, her mother has been sharing on Facebook about how the woman is responsible for getting her sent back to jail, simply because she borrowed some money. The woman expressed her confusion over how her mother raised a child who is perceived as greedy.

Readers in the comment section suggested that the woman should take legal action and speculated that her mother might have had previous encounters with the law.

"Returned to jail? So it seems like your mother has a tendency to break the law? Well, you made the correct decision. Don't give in, go ahead and file charges. She is not someone who should be a part of your life," remarked an individual.

"Someone claimed that your mother has engaged in illegal activities involving credit card fraud. In the United States, this is considered a serious crime and will be dealt with accordingly. It is important for her to have considered the consequences right from the start. If she wished to avoid returning to prison, then perhaps she should have refrained from engaging in such illicit behavior!" another individual expressed.

"Try not to be manipulated by her attempts to make you feel guilty. It seems like this is not the first time she has displayed this kind of behavior, and you likely have multiple reasons for your actions, not just one incident. It is important to rid yourself of this harmful influence in your life," another person commented.
