A Reddit user is questioning her decision to involve the police after discovering that her mother had taken her credit card without permission to make purchases for fast food and clothes.
A couple of weeks ago, the woman's mother requested a loan of approximately $500 from her daughter. The mother assured that she would repay the borrowed amount through Cash App once she received her next paycheck. The woman declined the request and when her mother attempted to argue, she firmly refused and ended the discussion.
The week after, she realized that her credit card was nowhere to be found.
She mentioned that she had accessed her online account to make a payment for her balance as she had received her check earlier that morning. To her surprise, she noticed that her balance was significantly higher than she had anticipated. While she was expecting charges for her electric bill, phone bill, and some gas expenses, she also noticed multiple charges that she knew weren't made by her. These charges included purchases at fast food establishments, clothing stores, and similar places.
The woman suspected there might be a technical error, so she contacted her credit card company and attempted to recollect where she could have unintentionally left the card. Nevertheless, when she shared her concerns about the stolen card with her mother over a phone call, her mother confessed that she was the person in possession of the card.
After I informed my mother about the incident, she reassured me not to be concerned because it wasn't actually stolen; she had simply borrowed it. To be honest, I became upset when I realized she was serious. She assured me that she would transfer the money to me through Cash App when she received her payment the following day, and she believed she would resolve the situation before I even noticed.
The angry woman instructed her mother to destroy the card because she had already made it inactive. However, her mother scolded her for being uncooperative and behaving like a spoiled child.
The situation got worse after that, and I ended up using offensive language towards her before instructing her not to get in touch with me or visit me, and then ending the call. Following that, I contacted both the police in my locality and hers to determine the appropriate jurisdiction to press charges.
The woman mentioned that her mother has been incessantly calling her, to the point where she had to block her. Additionally, her mother has been sharing posts on Facebook, claiming that the woman is responsible for her potential return to jail simply because she borrowed some money. The mother expressed her confusion at raising a child who is perceived as being unwilling to share or be generous.
FAMILY DISPUTE ARISES FOLLOWING ARGUMENT ABOUT SHARING STREAMING SERVICES
In the section where readers can leave comments, they suggested that the woman should take legal action and theorized that her mother may have had previous encounters with the law.
"Returned to jail? So it seems like your mother has a tendency to disregard the law? It sounds like you made the correct decision. Don't give in, go ahead and file charges. She is not a person you should have in your life," one individual remarked.
"According to someone's comment, it seems that the person's mother has engaged in credit card fraud. This action is considered a serious crime in the United States and will be handled accordingly. The commenter suggests that the mother should have considered the consequences before engaging in such illegal activities. If she wanted to avoid returning to jail, it would have been wiser for her to refrain from stealing."
"Do not allow her to manipulate you with guilt. It seems like there has been a consistent pattern of this kind of behavior in your past, and you have multiple valid reasons for making this decision, not just one incident. You do not deserve to have this negative influence in your life," another person added their perspective.
