The Grand Ole Opry is widely considered to be the most respected and cherished stage in country music. For artists, receiving an invitation to perform at this prestigious venue, and later becoming an official member, is often a highly significant milestone in their career.
Nevertheless, not all country music stars maintain a completely positive and harmonious relationship with the Opry throughout their entire career. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to exit the stage due to various reasons. These reasons could include breaching the venue's unwritten set of behavioral rules or not meeting the official criteria for membership as expected.
At the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, a tribute show called Opry Goes Dolly was held to celebrate Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024. However, one of the performers, Elle King, caused a lot of controversy during her performance. She appeared on stage clearly intoxicated, openly stating that she was extremely drunk. She engaged in confrontational exchanges with the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me." This behavior from Elle King generated a lot of outrage.
The establishment expressed regret to those who were upset by King's language. However, numerous supporters of the Opry on social media believed that King herself should issue an apology, and some even felt that her actions were serious enough to be banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Throughout the years, the Opry has banned multiple artists, but is King's conduct truly deserving of such a drastic measure? If we examine certain instances from the venue's early days, all of which occurred in 1973 or prior, it becomes evident that it is indeed a possibility.
Johnny Cash was not allowed to perform at the Opry anymore after a memorable show in 1973. During that performance, he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand, and his excessive consumption of alcohol played a significant role in that incident. One of the most well-known artists banned from the Opry is Hank Williams. His membership was revoked due to his frequent intoxication and lack of dependability. Additionally, Jerry Lee Lewis was also expelled from the Opry stage for various reasons, including the inappropriate use of profanity during a live broadcast.
However, it is important to note that there is only one singer who has been permanently and completely banned from the Opry, and it was not a decision made by the venue to keep the ban in place indefinitely. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions warrant a temporary absence from performing on the Opry stage, it is unlikely to have a lasting impact on her ability to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
