The Grand Ole Opry is widely regarded as the most prestigious stage in country music. When artists are invited to perform their first show or become official members, it is considered a significant milestone in their career.
However, not all country music stars have a completely positive and long-lasting relationship with the Opry. Throughout the years, several performers have been requested to no longer perform on the stage, either because they have violated the venue's unwritten rules of behavior or because they have not met the official membership expectations.
At a special tribute show honoring Dolly Parton's 78th birthday in 2024 called "Opry Goes Dolly," there was a controversial incident involving performer Elle King. She appeared on stage visibly intoxicated and openly admitted to being heavily intoxicated. She engaged in somewhat confrontational exchanges with members of the audience and even forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song "Marry Me." This unexpected behavior sparked outrage among the attendees.
The establishment expressed regret to those who were upset by the way King spoke. However, numerous fans of the Opry argued on social media that King should be the one to apologize and that her actions justified being banned from performing on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Throughout the years, the Opry has banned multiple artists on various occasions. However, is King's behavior truly deserving of such a drastic measure? To determine this, we can examine a few instances from the venue's early history, all of which occurred in 1973 or before. From these examples, it becomes evident that King's actions could indeed warrant such consequences.
Johnny Cash was prohibited from performing at the Opry following a memorable and explosive show in 1973. During this show, he destroyed stage lights using a microphone stand, and alcohol played a significant role in this incident. Hank Williams, who is considered one of the Opry's most well-known banned artists, had his membership revoked due to his excessive drinking and lack of reliability. Similarly, Jerry Lee Lewis was removed from the Opry stage for various reasons, including using explicit language live on air.
However, it is important to note that there is only one case of a singer being permanently and completely banned from the Opry. In this case, it was not the decision of the venue to enforce a lifelong ban. Therefore, it is probable that even if King's actions result in a temporary suspension from performing at the Opry, it is unlikely to have a lasting impact on her ability to play at the Grand Ole Opry.
